I'm a recently out-of-the-closet Harry Potter knitter. I work in a local yarn shop and I peddle all the good woolies, yet I do knit with cheap stuff for kids or if it's just cool yarn.
For the sweaters that Mrs. Weasley knits her kids *and Harry* for Christmas, I've used the Ann Norling Top-Down Raglan.
This pattern is great because it has accomodating patterns for different gauges of yarn (3.5 sts/1", 4.5 sts/1" etc...at least 4 different gauges). Makes up sizes 1 year to 12 years, works up slightly big (teen/small woman could fit in to size 12). Also, there is little or no seaming depending if you do the sleeves on double points or straight needles.
To give the sweaters that homemade "Mrs. Weasley" touch, I use LionBrand Homespun and follow the 3.5 sts/1" gauge and for finishing, I do not rib the sleeve cuffs or the bottom band but let them roll with the stocking stitch. Lastly, for the collar, I also do a curled stocking stitch cuff, but in the movie, it lies flat so all you'd have to do is fold it down inside and hem it down.
For the letters of the alphabet *optional* check library or online, I've always improvised.
Good luck!

Re: oh...
This might help - it's a formula and pattern for a top-down raglan, any gauge, any yarn.September 28 2003, 17:12:51 UTC 8 years ago
Re: oh...

Weasley Sweaters
Hello,I am not a member of LiveJournal, but I am very interested in your description of a Weasley Sweater. My sister has asked for one for Xmas, but I am no great knitter myself. I notice you mention you are from Michigan. I was wondering what you would charge to make one of these sweaters? My parents live in Sarnia, Ontario, just across the river from Port Huron, so we could arrange to send it there (postage paid). Would this be something you would be interested in doing? If you would like to discuss this further, yiou can email me at honeywagon@rocketmail.com. My sister's name is Jill, so it would be a letter J sweater! She is a huge Harry Potter fan!
Thanks for your time,
Joelle O.

Re: Weasley Sweaters
Hello! Thanks for finding me, but I appolgize that I cannot help you out. I just moved to Seattle and I'm on a crazy job search and I don't have anytime to even knit for myself know, regrettably.I will give you an estimate on pricing for future referrence *US dollars* You take the price of yarn *even cheap yarn adds up for a sweater* and you have to add labor. Labor is intensive for a sweater, and I charge typically around $50 to $100 for labor alone. But when you add all the hours, I've basically worked for peaunts. If you use cheap yarn, a child's sweater material can cost about $20 in yarn, at a yarn shop, $40 to $100 or more depending on the material content and how thick or thin it is.
Good luck in finding someone to make it.
